In 2022, TwinSpires, formerly Churchill Downs’ online gaming platform, ended its casino and sports betting operations in Pennsylvania to put a more substantial investment into its horse racing business. Churchill Downs entered the competitive field of online sportsbooks and casinos in 2019, but weak profit margins and exorbitant expenses convinced executives to refocus their business on horse racing.
If you’re seeking alternatives to TwinSpires that offer horse racing, look no further than BetMGM and Caesars, two recognized leaders in the gambling industry. Both provide access to an outstanding online casino experience as well as a sportsbook that allows you to bet on horse racing.

TwinSpires established its brand by being one of the premier online destinations for wagering on horse racing. It has since expanded its online reach with brand-name sportsbook and casino platforms. TwinSpires is owned by Churchill Downs Inc., home to the namesake race track where the Kentucky Derby runs. This parent company also owns BetAmerica and is expanding its marketplace by rebranding BetAmerica to TwinSpires in all its states of operation throughout the country.
In Pennsylvania, TwinSpires offers an online sportsbook, PA online casino and horse racing along with a retail sportsbook at its land-based partner, Presque Isle Downs & Casino at 8199 Perry Hwy, Erie, PA 16509. TwinSpires is licensed and regulated by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. TwinSpires went live with its online sportsbook in Pennsylvania on April 20, 2021, rebranding its BetAmerica sportsbook that launched in the state in December 2019.
Through conducting the evaluation of the TwinSpires sportsbook we found it offers a plethora of betting markets with competitive odds, an advantageous array of promotions in addition to its generous sign-up bonus.
✔️ Trustworthy brand | ❌ No customer loyalty program |

TwinSpires offers an extensive list of markets and betting options within those markets. It includes popular traditional bets like moneylines, totals and spreads. Player props and team prop bets are included along with game props such as first- and second-half lines, first to score, race to a certain amount of points, etc. When you select a market, each game includes a "more wagers" option to browse all the different kinds of bets available for that game beyond the displayed moneylines, spreads and totals.
Its catalog encompasses NBA basketball along with Euroleague and country markets in China, Germany, Spain and Turkey. Baseball leagues cover MLB, Japan and South Korea. Hockey includes NHL and KHL. Soccer, however, is the most expansive offering with the following leagues: Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A. Combine all these soccer leagues and a customer is presented with almost 60,000 betting options on a given day. The site also includes a good selection for NFL, even during the offseason and especially in-season. Golf, tennis, UFC/MMA, boxing, motorsports, Australian Rules, Rugby League, Rugby Union and cycling also are accounted for.
TwinSpires includes many betting options. Some of the most popular ones across the gambling world are:
Straight Bets: One of the most straightforward bets a customer can make. A standalone bet on one game. Example: New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles. This one game offers a moneyline, point spread and total points. You can bet the Eagles to beat the Giants straight up, meaning all the Eagles must do is win the game. Point spread means the team you choose must cover the points to win the bet. If the Eagles are favored by three points they must win by more than three points to "cover the spread."
Total Lines: Also called "game totals," "totals" or "O/U" (over/under) is a bet over or under the total points scored in a game. Example: Brooklyn Nets at Philadelphia 76ers, 230 points. The 230 points represents the game total. Here you'd bet if the score of both teams combined will be over or under 230 points.
Moneylines: No point spread, no problem. Just win, baby. Example: Philadelphia Phillies (-130) at Washington Nationals (+120). The "-130" and "+120" are the moneylines associated with each team. To win $100 on the favored Phillies, bet $130. A $100 bet on the underdog Nationals would profit $120. With moneylines, the team that is the "minus," as in Phillies -130, is the favorite.
Parlay Bets: Combine more than one bet. Instead of making a $100 bet on the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers all to win, which would cost you $300, you can combine all three at a much lower price, like $50. The catch with parlays is each wager must win in order to cash your parlay. Also, the more teams you add to a parlay bet the more money you'll win. You also increase the risk since there are more wagers, which is why the potential payout is higher.
Futures Bets: Instead of predicting the near future, like a same-day game, you are predicting the distant future. These bets tend to encompass markets like Super Bowl winner, World Series winner, etc. Example: It's July and Jalen Hurts looks like he can take his team all the way. You bet the Eagles to win the Super Bowl, which takes place about seven months after you make your bet.
Prop Bets: Short for proposition bet, where you're wagering on a specific outcome that's not tied to the game result. These essentially are O/U bets. Here's the proposition: JuJu Smith-Schuster to have O/U 95 yards receiving against the Browns. Here's another: What will be the result of the coin toss at the Super Bowl? You'd make a prop bet on heads or tails.
TwinSpires operates on the award-winning white-label sportsbook platform from Kambi, which comes with lots of exciting features. These are some of the key TwinSpires Sportsbook features:
Click on the “Live Right Now” tab on the TwinSpires Sportsbook menu to see a list of the current sporting events that are available for in-play betting. They include football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer and tennis, plus slightly more niche sports including cricket, darts, snooker and table tennis. TwinSpires covers more live games than many of its competitors, and it generally provides a strong selection of betting options on each game. It does not offer streaming of games, but you can stream horse races at TwinSpires.
The cash out option at TwinSpires Sportsbook PA adds an interesting new dimension to the wagering process. It allows you to exit a bet before the game has finished, either to take an early profit if your team is winning or claw back some of your risk amount if your team is losing. Cashing out early is a gamble in itself, but it certainly gives you more control and flexibility when sports betting at the TwinSpires app or desktop site.
TwinSpires publishes a range of odds boosts over the course of the year. Click on the “Super Odds” option to see a list of the current boosts that are on offer. One example was an MLB player hitting a home run, boosted from +175 to +225, which is a 28.6% profit increase. You also find some intriguing sign-up offers in there from time to time, such as the White Sox and Yankees both to record a hit in an MLB game, boosted from -10000 to +10000. You could bet $1 at those boosted odds, so it was essentially a $100 free for new customers.
TwinSpires Sportsbook offers a bet builder on football, basketball and soccer. This allows you to combine multiple selections from the same game into a single wager, known as a same-game parlay. You cannot create same game parlays on baseball, but you will find a list of pre-determined same game parlay options to choose from in the “Pre-Packs” tab at the TwinSpires mobile app and desktop site.

TwinSpires does not currently offer a rewards program for sports betting customers. It does have a loyalty program for racebook customers. If you want a sports wagering loyalty program in Pennsylvania, you could try the BetMGM PA Sportsbook or the DraftKings PA Sportsbook.
The user experience at TwinSpires Sportsbook is excellent. It features an attractive blue, white and gray color scheme, and it is very easy to navigate. There are helpful shortcuts, such as the “Live Right Now” and Starting Soon” tabs and the “Popular” menu on the homepage. There is no search function, which is a shame, but we were able to find games very quickly, as the layout is intuitive, and pages load up instantly. You can also enjoy an abundance of stats provided by Sportradar on the TwinSpires sports betting site, which really enhances the user experience.
TwinSpires has been running a successful racebook app for many years, and it has now made a successful transition to mobile sports wagering. It has not yet received many user reviews on the app store, but it already has a very impressive average rating. We tested it out and found that the TwinSpires mobile app is beautifully designed, full of features and a pleasure to use. We had no issues using it on old mobile devices, as the functionality was always strong. We can highly recommend the TwinSpires betting app.
On the desktop platform, there is more space with which to work so less navigation is required compared to the app. The larger screen presents more visible features for easier navigation.
TwinSpires has been running a secure online wagering operation since 2007, so it has a lot more experience than many of its competitors. It has never suffered a security breach, thanks to its investment in strong encryption software and dedicated security experts. We would just advise you to choose a strong password and make sure you never share it with anyone.
There is a gold and white “RG” logo at the top right of the TwinSpires PA homepage. Click on it to access the responsible gambling section. It is one of the best responsible gambling hubs we have seen, thanks to the impressive design, the concise advice and the sheer level of detail it includes. It offers myths and facts about gambling, advice on the warning signs of problem gambling, six clear options to limit your play and links to a slew of external organizations that can help.
TwinSpires is one of just a handful of online sportsbooks to offer 24/7 customer service via live chat. You will also find this at BetMGM and Caesars, but it is rare. The TwinSpires customer support team is well-trained, helpful and quick to respond to queries. We were impressed by the level of knowledge on display when we tested out the service for our TwinSpires Sportsbook review.
TwinSpires offers bettors in Pennsylvania a fantastic all-around gambling hub. It has the best online racebook in the business, an excellent online casino, and a world-class sportsbook powered by Kambi. You can benefit from a large welcome bonus, 24/7 customer support, an abundance of pre-game and live betting options, a quality mobile app, a stats hub and a superb all-around user experience.
There are still some improvements that we would like to see in the future. Scrapping the charge for credit card deposits would be welcome, as would the introduction of a loyalty program and live streaming on sporting events. However, TwinSpires stands out as a brilliant online sportsbook, so we recommend it to bettors in Pennsylvania.
