The Pittsburgh Steelers have a few questions to answer in this offseason. The biggest question of them all is: Who will be their quarterback next season?
Russell Wilson started the teamās last 12 games, including the postseason, this season. While the Steelers made the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons, the team ended the 2024-25 campaign losing five straight games and getting eliminated in the Wild Card Round.
Wilson, who signed a one-year contract in March after the Denver Broncos released him, will once again be a free agent in this upcoming offseason. So, too, will Justin Fields, who started in place of Wilson as he rehabbed a calf injury.

Contract Length to Be Key For Wilson
In regular season starts this season, Wilson threw for 2,482 yards, completed 63.7% of his passes and had a 16-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. His best game came against Cincinnati on Dec. 1, when he threw for 414 yards and three scores in a 44-38 win.
With the Steelers selecting 21st in the first round of Aprilās NFL Draft, itās unlikely Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders or Jalen Milroe fall to Pittsburghās pick. That doesnāt mean the Steelers wonāt pick a QB, but a later-round choice may not be ready to start on Week 1, meaning the team would need to sign a veteran to start the season.
The Steelers are projected to have more than $50 million available in salary cap space for the 2025 season. Wilson made $39 million, but Pittsburgh only paid him $1.2 million. The remainder came from his old contract with the Broncos. For him to stay in the Steel City, heāll likely need to accept a contract with a significantly smaller salary than he earned with the Broncos.
Pittsburgh Steelers Sign Quarterback Tuesday
Speaking to the media on Monday, the former Super Bowl-winning quarterback reiterated his hopes for resigning with the Steelers in the offseason. However, coach Mike Tomlin was noncommittal to resigning either Wilson or Fields during a press conference on Tuesday.
While, based on our odds, we believe the Steelers are the favorites to resign Wilson, there will be a few teams also looking for a quarterback who also will not get a first-rounder. If Pittsburgh decides to move on from Wilson, heāll likely find work with one of those teams for next season.
Pittsburgh did make more news Tuesday, with the signing of former Miami quarterback Skylar Thompson. Thompson was the backup to Tua Tagovailoa and started a couple games this season. However, itās highly unlikely Thompson will be anything other than a backup for the Black-and-Gold.
