With the Pittsburgh Penguins mired in a mediocre start to the 2024-25 NHL regular season, it’s worth wondering whether GM Kyle Dubas will pull the plug on trading some of the club’s most prized assets.
One such asset is 28-year-old blue liner Marcus Pettersson of Sweden, who has 11 points in 27 games this season to go with a point share total of 4.2 for the 11-12-4 Penguins, with the veteran defenseman earning $4.025 million this season, which is his eighth in the league.
The Penguins defenseman is expected to be a hot topic ahead of the NHL trade deadline. With many across Pennsylvania sports betting expecting the Penguins to consider trading the Swede, PennStakes.com developed exclusive odds projecting Pettersson’s next landing spot.
Team | Odds | Percent Chance |
Minnesota Wild | +450 | 18.2% |
Vancouver Canucks | +500 | 16.7% |
Buffalo Sabres | +600 | 14.3% |
Winnipeg Jets | +650 | 13.3% |
Edmonton Oilers | +700 | 12.5% |
The Field/ Stay With Pittsburgh Penguins | +300 | 25.0% |

While our top odds have Pettersson either remaining in the Steel City or going to another club entirely (+300), the best landing spot for the eighth year blue liner right now in our projections is the Minnesota Wild, who hold +450 odds of landing Pettersson right now.
Should Pettersson not wind up in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, keep an eye on another Western Conference team, with the Vancouver Canucks sitting at +500 to land the 28-year-old, ranking ahead of the Buffalo Sabres (+600), Winnipeg Jets (+650) and Edmonton Oilers (+700) on our Pettersson odds board.
To date, Pettersson spent his first eight NHL seasons with the Anaheim Ducks (who drafted him 38th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft) and the Penguins, with the Swedish defenseman playing 422 games with Pittsburgh after starting his career with 49 games played in Orange County.
For now, the veteran defenseman will look to help the Penguins turn the corner after a tough start to the young NHL season, with Pittsburgh looking up at the Metropolitan Division-leading Washington Capitals, who are currently 10 points ahead of them in the league table.
