Russell Wilson Next Team Odds: Where Will Steelers Veteran QB Sign?

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

Russell Wilson revived his NFL career last season as he helped the Pittsburgh Steelers reach the playoffs for the fourth time in five years, but will he stay with the Black and Gold in 2025?

The 36-year-old quarterback is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and several teams besides the Steelers are trying to figure out the QB situation for the upcoming season.

PennStakes.com, your source for gaming news in the Keystone State, has developed exclusive odds on where we believe the 36-year-old will be taking snaps next season. A note, these odds are not available at any Pennsylvania sports betting operator.

FYI, we developed these odds prior to reports coming out that the New York Jets will sign Justin Fields, who split time with Wilson in Pittsburgh. That could increase Wilson’s chances of staying in Pittsburgh, especially since the Steelers traded for D.K. Metcalf, Wilson’s former teammate with the Seattle Seahawks. According to Stathead, in their three seasons together (2019-2021) in Seattle, Metcalf caught 199 of Wilson’s passes for 2,919 yards and 25 touchdowns.

However, there are reports circulating that Aaron Rodgers, who was the Jets quarterback this past season, may end up signing with the Steelers. If that’s the case, then it almost assuredly means Wilson will be looking elsewhere.

Contract Length to Be Key For Wilson

In regular season starts this season, Wilson threw for 2,482 yards, completed 63.7% of his passes and had a 16-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. His best game came against Cincinnati on Dec. 1, when he threw for 414 yards and three scores in a 44-38 win.

With the Steelers selecting 21st in the first round of April’s NFL Draft, it’s unlikely Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders or Jalen Milroe fall to Pittsburgh’s pick. That doesn’t mean the Steelers won’t pick a QB, but a later-round choice may not be ready to start in Week 1, meaning the team would need to sign a veteran to start the season.

The Steelers are projected to have more than $50 million available in salary cap space for the 2025 season. Wilson made $39 million, but Pittsburgh only paid him $1.2 million. The remainder came from his old contract with the Broncos. For him to stay in the Steel City, he’ll likely need to accept a contract with a significantly smaller salary than he earned with the Broncos.

New York State Of Mind?

If there’s a team that could benefit from an experienced signal caller like Wilson, it’s the New York Giants. New York was next to last in scoring last season, averaging just 16.1 points a game as they went 3-14. They have the No. 3 pick in this year’s NFL Draft, but signing Wilson would allow the team to use that pick for one of their other issues, perhaps an offensive lineman.

Despite their pronounced lack of scoring, the Giants have some quality receivers. Malik Nabers had one of the best rookie seasons last year, catching 109 passes for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns. A QB upgrade with Wilson could also help a young receiver like Wan’Dale Robinson who caught 93 passes last season but only amassed 699 yards.

If Wilson is looking to catch on with a contending team, then the Minnesota Vikings would be his best bet. Sam Darnold, last season’s starter, is signing with Seattle, and although the Vikings drafted J.J. McCarthy in the first round last season, team officials have indicated they want to bring in an experienced quarterback. The possibility of throwing deep balls to Justin Jefferson could lead Wilson to Minneapolis this fall.
