How Do Super Bowl MVP QBs Do the Next Season?

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

On the heels of his red-hot postseason, it’ll be interesting to see where Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts goes in the year ahead, with the second round pick out of Oklahoma winning his first ever Super Bowl MVP award for his heroics against the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.

PennStakes.com was interested in seeing how quarterbacks who have won that honor do the year following. Using Pro-Football-Reference.com, we analyzed the 10 most recent Super Bowl MVP quarterbacks, looking at two factors: their completion percentage the year after their Super Bowl MVP performance and their team's win-loss record the next season.

In that 40-22 conquest over K.C., Hurts connected on 17-of-22 passes for 221 yards and a pair of touchdowns while racking up the most rushing yards of any quarterback in Big Game history (72), leaving many around the league to wonder where the 26-year-old goes from here.

Dating back to Aaron Rodgers’ honor in Super Bowl XLV, winners of the Super Bowl MVP award have achieved high levels of success the following year, with an average winning percentage of .730 with a completion percentage of 65.9% between 2011 and 2025.

Of those 10 QBs, Rodgers had the best winning percentage the year after his Super Bowl conquest, with him and the Green Bay Packers going 15-1 (.938), while Patrick Mahomes’ .882 winning percentage this season is the next best overall figure, followed by Tom Brady, who had winning percentages of .800 and .813.

As far as pass completion percentage is concerned, Nick Foles set the standard during the 2018-19 NFL season, hitting on 72.3% of his passes - albeit while going 5-5 as the starter in the City of Brotherly Love, though he did so in limited action that season.

All in all, Eagles fans can only hope that Hurts’ success this past season is the start of a run of championships for the NFC East franchise, mirroring the success that Mahomes and the Chiefs have seen since his first Super Bowl MVP win during the 2019-20 league year.
